A pair of sun dogs often flanks the sun. Sun dogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the Sun is close to the horizon. It is noteworthy, that it is worthwhile to look for a circumzenithal arc when sun dogs are visible since the same type of ice crystals are responsible for both phenomena.
